White may be the most clear-cut neutral color, and nothing says cottage, farmhouse, classic or even modern like this neutral canvas color. It’s a crisp, clean color that provides the perfect backdrop for other colors, textures, and patterns to pop. Stretches of white as a neutral background in design seems to be some of the most casual and tranquil views for the eyes. But, creating incredible, well-balanced rooms isn’t as easy as simply painting with white. Here are five simple tips on using this fantastic neutral color in your design:
1 ~ Think of white as practical. White is pretty “do-able”, right? It’s really easy to care for. Do you like a more relaxed atmosphere? Do you like ironing? Um, not me. “Lived-in” look with no ironing? Why, yes, of course, please! Slipcovers and linens can be bleached and/or cleaned fairly quickly. It’s quite a functional color in that way.
2 ~ Use varied shades of white. It creates interest and depth. By varying the shades through the wall color or textures/materials, it keeps the room from being dull or “flat”. Try using different finishes (ie: matte, eggshell, satin) of the same color. Even if the color may be the same, the subtle finish difference creates a varying “reflective-ness” to surfaces.
3 ~ Texture is really important for white interiors. It adds dimension, warmth and definition to a space and keeps it from appearing stark and cold. Draw your texture from items such as: natural woods, wood floors, planked walls and/or ceilings, baskets, fabrics, aged furnishings, rugs, old textiles, bricks, etc.
4 ~ Bring in your own likes with collections you may have accumulated. These collections can add color as well as pattern to the room. But, keep them under control and focused, because too much can make it over the top. Edit your collections to a favorite few or categorize the collections.
5 ~ Introduce pops of color. Colorful accessories and decor can infuse an otherwise bland room and make it more vibrant and personal. Wake up a room with quirky finds that have splashes of interesting color.
White is one of those colors that many homeowners shy away from, as white may come across as cold or sterile at times. But, an all-white room doesn’t have to mean that it lacks character and personality. It is peaceful, inviting and when used properly, could be one of the most beautiful colors to use in a room.
